What do I need to know about Video Tape Care?

  1. Completely fast forward and then rewind each videocassette before its first use. This acclimates the tape to the machine for smoother recording.

2. Avoid recording essential material on the first and last minute of each videocassette. The simple action of shuttling the reels inside the cassette puts a lot of stress on the sections of tape nearest the hubs. These portions are also susceptible to "hub imprint" which can cause picture distortion.

3. Try not to leave your tape running in the "pause" mode any longer than you have to. This causes excessive wear and can damage your tape.

4. Never put your tapes on top of electronic equipment. This exposes the tape to dust and heat, and the resulting loss of ventilation can damage your VCR.

5. Do not touch the tape inside your videocassette.

6. Keep your tapes away from dust, magnetic fields, smoke, direct sunlight, high heat and humidity.

7. It is important that the cassette flap, which guards the tape, always be kept closed.

8. Handle your tapes carefully. Never "jam" them into your VCR too quickly. Each videocassette is a precision instrument. You can expect trouble if you drop one.

9. Hot or cold tapes in a VCR can cause condensation. Condensation will ruin your equipment. Tape and equipment should be near the same temperature before using together.

10. Keep the video heads of your VCR clean. Follow your manufacturer's instructions.
